Both Cincinnati and Columbus have a thriving health care scene, which means our ABSN students have access to some of the best hospital networks in the country.

While Cincinnati has Bon Secours Mercy Health and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Columbus has OhioHealth and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. So, you really can’t go wrong with the clinical placements available in either city.

These cities also have a cost of living that is lower than the national average, with Cincinnati eight percent lower and Columbus 10 percent lower. “The cost of living in the Midwest is so much cheaper than what I am used to,” Sarah said.

Doron, a 2018 ABSN program graduate, told us he relocated to Cincinnati from New York because he felt the Midwest was a place where he could focus on his studies without distractions.

As you can see, both Cincinnati and Columbus are great places for nursing students to get ahead in life. But what is it about these cities that make them truly unique?

CINCINNATI AT A GLANCE

Founded in late 1788, Cincinnati has a rich history, but it’s a city you definitely wouldn’t consider old. In fact, Cincinnati is dubbed one of the “youngest” cities in the nation given the number of college graduates, career starters, artists, and musicians who come here to enjoy a thriving economy, expanding job market, and low cost of living.

With a population of around 300,000, Cincinnati is the third largest city in Ohio. It’s also home to several Fortune 500 companies, including Proctor & Gamble, The Kroger Company, Fifth Third Bancorp, and Macy’s. But what you’ll probably find most appealing is that Cincinnati is in the midst of an exciting renaissance, with new developments and projects occurring all over the city.

A melting pot of food and entertainment.

Home to the Reds (MLB) and Bengals (NFL) teams, countless craft breweries and several distilleries, Cincinnati is a hub for sports, beer, and bourbon. It’s also the capital for the game cornhole, with locals responsible for developing the American Cornhole Organization.

With one of the richest German-based histories in all of America, Cincinnati isn’t lacking when it comes to Bavarian cuisine and beer. Just visit Hofbräuhaus brewery and the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood to experience this rich heritage. Not to mention, Bavarian immigrants founded Graeter’s ice cream here in 1870. And we dare you to try goetta, a pork-oat sausage patty created by the city’s German settlers.

A cultural scene that has its act together.

When it comes to visual and performing arts, Cincinnati definitely has its act together. In fact, the city has one of the most diverse cultural scenes in the Midwest, with several orchestras, theaters, museums, and a large community of working artists.

COLUMBUS AT A GLANCE

Columbus is the capital of Ohio and the largest city in the state. Founded in 1812, the city gets its name from explorer Christopher Columbus. As of 2018, Columbus ranked as the 14th largest city in the country based on population. Perhaps even more interesting is the fact that half of the residents in the United States live within 500 miles of the city.

Columbus is also one of the top 10 youngest cities in the country, with the average age of its residents staying at 30 to 33 years old for nearly a decade. And thanks to its historic neighborhoods, booming downtown arts and sports districts, open attitude, and affordable quality of life, the city is gaining nationwide recognition.

A food and craft beer scene to savor.

Columbus has an amazing and diverse culinary scene, with destination-worthy restaurants that include Wolf’s Ridge Brewing, Veritas, and Watershed Kitchen & Bar. Columbus also ranks in the top five U.S. cities for craft beer production, with notable breweries that include Hoof Hearted Brewing, Columbus Brewing Company, and Zaftig Brewing Company.

A cultural scene that deserves a standing ovation.

The cultural scene in Columbus is thriving, with more than enough places for you to go and enjoy the visual and performing arts. From the Columbus Museum of Art and the Short North Stage to the Columbus Dance Theatre and the Opera Columbus, the city leaves no cultural stone unturned.
